JasperServer v3 Community Edition Release
JasperForge Administrator
OK, with JasperServer v3 out the door, I wanted to let you know about some details of the release.
The open source "Community Edition" release has a number of enhancements that make
JasperServer more interactive. The repository manager, which allows you to browse report definitions,
data sources and other JasperServer metadata and content, is now a drag and drop, explorer interface,
making it much easier to find reports, analysis views and other information.
The underlying JasperReports version in JasperServer v3 is 3.0.0. With that has come the ability to
export JasperServer reports to Flash, a great contribution from Victor Kolesnikov in Kiev, Ukraine, who
worked with Teodor to get this out. The Flash based reports can be seen through the browser. The
enhancements to JasperReport’s ability to customize text, like truncation, are also included.
Parameters for reports ("input controls") can now be localized, and you have the option for
the parameters to appear as a pop-up (previous default behavior) or within the page.
A lot of people use JasperServer as a report generator from other applications, running reports from a
URL rather than having users log in to JasperServer directly. To help with this, URLs to run reports can
include a user name and password to maintain security, and a locale, so that reports can be easily
localized. For example:
The report resulting from this URL will appear in a standard JasperServer view report screen. As
before, you can customize the look and feel of the screen and controls by configuring the SiteMesh
templates to your needs or adding your own JSPs for the report.
For those people who use the JasperServer database to store users and passwords, there is now a
password expiration option, and the ability to the user to easily change their password.
Moving all or part of your repository between databases has been made easier with the "update on
import" option. As before, you can export the repository onto a file system, and then import into a
different repository, and now you can overwrite existing resources if needed.
In order to understand how people are using JasperServer, we have added a "heartbeat"
mechanism that lets us know some limited details about running servers. It can be easily disabled if
needed. You can find more details about the heartbeat at http://www.jaspersoft.com/heartbeat/
In an effort to enhance the JasperForge community experience and to deliver a superior platform for
Jaspersoft community development, we’re in the process of significantly upgrading the infrastructure of
the JasperForge site.
Over the next two-weeks, we’ll be introducing a new JasperForge environment. As part of this
migration, all current JasperForge assets such as user accounts; forum posts; bug, feature, and patch
tracker artifacts; samples and tutorials; news; blogs; wikis; and projects will be migrated to a new
JasperForge infrastructure.
This infrastructure improvement requires we take JasperForge offline on a few occasions over the next
two-weeks. JasperForge will be unavailable at the following times:
12:01 AM to 5:00 AM PDT, Friday July 4
12:01 AM to 5:00 AM PDT, Friday July 11
12:01 AM to 5:00 AM PDT, July 17
As part of our upgrade process, JasperForge will be in browse-only mode from 5:00 AM PDT on Thursday
July 17 to 12:01 AM PDT on Saturday July 19. In browse only mode, the Developer Forge will not be
available for use and login, registration, and new forum posts will all be disabled. The new JasperForge
environment will be online and ready for use at 12:01 AM PDT on Saturday July 19.
Between now and July 19, we’d like you to explore the new JasperForge site; we’ll post the details
on how to access the new site on July 7.
We look forward to your feedback and to welcoming you to the new JasperForge site on July 19.
After five-years of being around open source projects with hundreds of thousands of users, joining the
JasperSoft community, with downloads well over one-million, gave me pause. Especially now, as the team
puts the finishing touches on what will become JasperForge.org 1.0, I stop to think about what our
singular focus on “Business Intelligence for Everyone” truly means for the largest open
source business intelligence community in the world.
For us, “Business Intelligence for Everyone” means providing the right kind of operational
intelligence for the right person at right time. No mamoth systems, just great insight when you need it
and where you expect it.
JasperSoft has demostrated a commitment to “Business Intelligence for Everyone” with the
creation of JasperForge.org; the center of the JasperSoft open source ecosystem.
I’d like to point out just a few of the highlights you’ll find on JasperForge.org:
JasperSoft-Sponsored Projects
JasperSoft sponsors the leading open source business intelligence projects. These projects form the core
of JasperForge.org and the broader JasperSoft community. These projects are open to all JasperForge.org
members to view.

Jaspersoft v3, Red Hat as an OEM, and the Spirit of Open Source
Brian Gentile
I spent most of last week at the
Red Hat Summit in Boston. The Red Hat team did a good job creating a conference that seemed to deliver
real value to a reported 1,000 attendees from their developer community and customer base. Many great
conversations occurred in a wide variety of technical sessions - and you could sense the continued
progress of open source throughout the event. Because the Summit represents a sizable gathering of those
who are faithful users of open source technology, this seemed like a natural place for us to debut what
is the most important product upgrade in Jaspersoft’s history. Jaspersoft was a sponsor and
exhibitor, but much more importantly, we used this Summit as the launch point for Jaspersoft Business
Intelligence Suite v3. Fortunately, the press and analyst opinion of our new products has been
outstanding and we already have a dozen early customers and thousands of engaged community members who
have endorsed Jaspersoft v3. If you are among these early reviewers and adopters, I thank you for your
time and many positive contributions.
Also at the Red Hat Summit, we
announced a new OEM partnership with Red Hat. JasperServer Professional will be embedded within the Red
Hat Network (Satellite) to provide sophisticated reporting and analytics on a wide variety of systems
management and monitoring information. The real winners are Red Hat customers as the new reporting and
analytics capabilities they’ll receive via Jaspersoft will far surpass what is in place today.
As a team, we’ve worked on
Jaspersoft v3 for many months. I’m most proud that this release includes so much functionality
that began with the Jaspersoft community. Because of this, we are now eager to deliver the generally
available release back for review and use. Immediately, the 30-day trial version of Jaspersoft v3
Professional Edition is available (at http://www.jaspersoft.com/jasper
softv3_eval_landing_download.html ) for download. By June 30, the Jaspersoft v3 Community Edition
will be available (at www.jasperforge.org ) for full download.
As you experience either edition of v3, your comments and feedback are wanted and
anticipated.
And, thanks again for making the
Jaspersoft BI Community the most vibrant and valuable on the planet.

It’s Jaspersoft Time

What a great time to be in open
source software! And, what a great time to be in business intelligence! The Jaspersoft community and
customer base never stops energizing us . . . and urging us toward ever-greater possibilities with our
reporting and analytics tools. I am thrilled to be leading Jaspersoft at this point in time. I spent all
of 2006 and 2007 serving on Jaspersoft’s Board of Directors. For the past nearly 6 months,
I’ve been President & CEO. Top on my early agenda: meeting with the community and customer base
and learning as much and as quickly as possible. Collectively, you’ve not disappointed. From your
experience and perspective, I’ve learned a lot.
I know that you place big value
in Jaspersoft delivering affordable but simple-to-integrate and use open source business intelligence
tools. I know that you admire the rapid product advancements and innovation that we’ve delivered
and the fact that our business and operating principles are totally transparent (which enables us to earn
and maintain your trust). I also know that you place great value on the people and knowledge at
Jaspersoft, which gives you greater assurance that we’ll continue to build the kind of products and
company that you are proud to be associated with. Maybe most importantly, you’ve told me remarkable
stories about the breadth and depth of expertise within the Jaspersoft community – and I’ve
seen this firsthand. I see the depth of this expertise whenever I visit JaspeForge.org and check up on
the latest (of over 300) projects. I am reminded of the breadth of this expertise when I visit
JasperBabylon (also on the JasperForge) to see how many new localized language versions of Jaspersoft
products are now available (over 24!). For all these reasons and more, you’ve helped me understand
the value that we all create together.
After just 6 months on the job,
this is my pledge to you: Jaspersoft will continue to deliver the world’s most capable open source
business intelligence tools in the world. And, we’ll do so with unmatched energy and transparency.
In return, I’ll simply ask that you use those tools everywhere you can. And, tell the world about
them so ours continues to be the most vibrant business intelligence community anywhere. In the meantime,
tell me how we’re doing. If you have an idea that you think can make Jaspersoft, its products or
its community even better, tell me at bgentile@Jaspersoft.com. You can expect to be hearing from me here
from time-to-time. So, if you have a comment or topic you’d like me to discuss, just say so. And,
thanks for helping to make Jaspersoft the most widely-deployed business intelligence software on the
planet.

The iPhone As JasperServer client
Giulio Toffoli
Apple just announced the availability of the SDK for the iPhone. Very good stuff and given the
capabilities of the iPhone to read PDF files, this will probably sentence the dead of the Sony eBook
reader and other similar devices. Anyway the event totally cached my attention. What can JasperSoft do to
enter the iPhone business? Well, a dedicated client for JasperServer would certainly be very cool. The
pure C client available for the JasperServer WS API should be perfect as starting point. We’ll see
what happen if I get a Mac…
