Announcing JasperReports Server 4.2.1 Community Edition

JasperReports Server now includes the following:

• iPad Support
  • JasperReports Server's web application now supports the Apple iPad running the Safari browser. In this release, the server supports viewing content (such as browsing the repository; running and copying reports; and viewing dashboards) and creating Ad Hoc reports.
• Interactive HTML reports
  • Using JasperReports Server, you can now publish reports that allow users to sort or filter in the browser. Users click to modify these reports on-the-fly. Interactivity is available for all reports that use the table component.
• New HTML Output
  • The server includes a new XHTML exporter that is less strict with regard to overlapping HTML elements. You can specify whether the server uses the pre-existing HTML exporter or the new XHTML exporter. If you want your table component reports to be interactive, JasperReports Server must use the XHTML exporter.
• REST API
  • JasperReports Server now includes web services based on the REST (Representational State Transfer) style of architecture. In this release, the RESTful services allow you to access repository functionality, such as getting, putting, posting, and deleting objects in the repository. 

Database Server Support Changes:

• Default Database Change to PostgreSQL
  • The bundled database installed by default with JasperReports Server has changed from MySQL to PostgreSQL 9.0.4. JasperReports Server continues to support a wide range of databases, including MySQL. MySQL users can set up JasperReports Server during installation to connect to their existing MySQL database.
  • In earlier releases, Jaspersoft also provided and installed the driver for the MySQL database. The installer no longer provides this driver. MySQL 5.1 users can download the JDBC driver, mysql-connector-java-5.1.17-bin.jar, from this web site: http://dev.mysql.com/downloads/connector/j/
  •  An existing (unbundled) PostgreSQL instance can be located on a remote host. You need to enable remote connections in the PostgreSQL configuration. See the JasperReports Server Installation Guide for more information.
  • JasperReports Server now supports MySQL 5.5 as a data source. Note that MySQL 5.5 is not currently supported as a repository database (see Known Issues).

Application Server Support Changes:

• JasperReports Server now supports Tomcat 7.0, and recommends version 7.0.19 or later.

Other Changes:

• Updated versions of JasperReports Library and iReport Designer
  • JasperReports Server 4.2.1 includes JasperReports Library and iReport Designer 4.2.1, which include support for PDF/A compliant PDF export, and the ability to apply interactivity (sorting or filtering) to report components.

There are a number of key features/enhancements that users have been requesting.

• One is that there are now 64 bit installers. These 64 bit installers are available for Windows, Linux, and Macintosh.
• Language resource bundles have now been added to the Community Project code line. There is "out of the box" support for Chinese, English, French, German, Japanese, and Spanish. You can change the Locale at the Login page to have these languages immediately displayed upon login.
• Localization of Input Controls - In previous releases, the labels applied to a report's input controls could only support a single language. Now, you can supply resource bundles that define the input control's labels in various languages. In addition, if the input control relies on a fixed list of values, the list of values can also support multiple languages. For more information, refer to the JasperReports Server Community Project User Guide.
• iReport Designer has been up updated to 4.0.2.
• In addition, there are numerous bug fixes and small enhancements.

Here's a summary of the work we did:

New UI Look and Feel: The usability and look of the Web based user interface was improved to simplify various user tasks and to make it more visually appealing.

New UI Framework: The underlying UI was completely re-architected which is now called the Jaspersoft UI Framework. The framework allows the application's look and feel to be modified more quickly and easily using standard CSS-markup.
    
Jaspersoft Themes: JasperReports Server now supports the ability to define UI Themes for the web interface. Themes are a collection of fonts, colors, and layout to direct the look and feel of JasperReports Server.  These themes take advantage of the UI Framework to let users define Cascading Style Sheets (CSS), images, and other graphical elements of the application. Themes can stored in the repository and updated without the need to restart the server. 

New Macintosh Installer: This release includes a brand new installer for the Mac! You can check in the JasperReports Server Installation Guide for infomation on installing and starting/stopping.

Auto-Upgrade Script: For users who are upgrading an existing 3.7.0/3.7.1 instance, there is an "auto-upgrade" shell script (Windows, Linux, Mac) which automates the upgrade tasks. See Chapter 8 in the Install Guide "Upgrading Using SQL Upgrade Scripts"

Auto-Install Script: For users who are not using the Binary Installer, there is an "auto-install" shell script (Windows, Linux, Mac) which automates most manual install tasks. See Chapter 5 in the Install Guide.

Execute Only Permission: Administrators can set the new execute-only permission on resources in the repository. This allows users to execute resources such as Reports and OLAP Views without the underlying resources being visible to the user.

Dynamically Manage Log Settings: There is a new menu item: Manage > Log Settings. On this page you can dynamically change your log settings and see the results immediately. For instance, this can help you inspect your generated SQL queries or look at your input control queries.

Upgrade to Mondrian 3.2.0: This upgrade to the OLAP engine gives improved native performance, olap4j drill through support, improved XML/A support, a Greenplum dialect, and more.

Upgrade to JasperReports 4.0.0: New features include a new CSV query executer to simplify configuring CSV data sources, a new CSV metadata exporter, and more.

Upgrade to iReport 4.0.0: iReport is included in the Binary Installers and it has full support for JasperReports 4.0.0 and a number of bug fixes.

New Repository Browser and Search: The JasperReports Server UI has been enhanced to include separate Repository Browse and Repository Search pages. This makes repository browse faster and easier. Additionally, repository search has its own page for faster and easier searching.

The Workbench allows you to visually create and validate OLAP schemas that can be used in JasperAnalysis.

Improvements include:

• Covers all elements of the JasperAnalysis 3.5 OLAP schema (Mondrian 3.1.1)
• Expanded prompting of values from the underlying database and related parts of the schema
• Testing the schema against the underlying database
• Improved MDX query execution and display, with automated generation of example MDX queries, based on the current schema
